Okay, so the other day, I was chilling with my friend, and we got into this whole debate about whether her dog and her new pet rabbit could actually get along. I’ve always been a bit of a “let’s try it and see” kind of person, so I figured, why not document this little experiment?
The Setup
First, I made sure both pets were healthy. No one wants to introduce a sick animal to another, right? So, vet check-ups were the first step. Both the dog, a super chill Golden Retriever named Max, and the rabbit, a fluffy little thing named Cottontail, got the all-clear.
Slow Introductions
Next, I didn’t just throw them in a room together. Seriously, bad idea! I started with scent swapping. I took a blanket Max had been sleeping on and put it in Cottontail’s area, and vice versa. I did this for a few days so they could get used to each other’s smell without the pressure of a face-to-face meeting.

Supervised Meetings
- I kept Max on a leash, for sure. This was crucial for control.
- The first few meetings were super short, like, five minutes tops.
- I made sure Cottontail had a safe space to retreat to, like his hutch, where Max couldn’t reach him.
- I watched their body language like a *’s tail was relaxed and gently * seem to relax.
During these short visits, I would talk calmly and give both animals treats, but it’s better to make sure they focus on each other, so rewards will be better after a good, calm interaction.
Gradual Increase in Time
Over the next week, I gradually increased the time they spent together, always supervised, of course. The key here was to be patient and not rush things. If either animal seemed stressed, I would end the session immediately.
Positive Reinforcement
I always, always, used positive reinforcement. Lots of praise and the occasional treat when they were calm and behaving well around each other. Never any punishment – that would just create negative associations.
What I Observed
It wasn’t instant best friends, but it wasn’t a disaster either! Max, being the gentle giant he is, mostly just seemed curious about Cottontail. Cottontail was understandably a bit nervous at first, but he slowly started to relax. He’d hop around a bit, and Max would just watch him with this goofy, happy expression.
The Outcome (So Far!)
It’s been a couple of weeks now, and while they’re not exactly cuddling, they can definitely be in the same room together without any drama. Max is respectful of Cottontail’s space, and Cottontail doesn’t seem scared anymore. They even sniffed noses the other day, which I thought was a pretty big win! I still don’t leave them alone unsupervised, and I probably never will, just to be safe. But overall, I’d call this experiment a success (so far!).
Remember every animal is different. Don’t expect everything can be the same.
