Alright, let’s talk about this here 1922 Mercury dime. Now, I ain’t no fancy coin expert or nothin’, but I can tell ya what I know and what I’ve heard ’round the way.
First off, people keep sayin’ this 1922 dime is a favorite with collectors. I guess that means them city folks with their fancy magnifying glasses really like it. They go on and on about the in-depth overview and values and all that jazz, but for me, it’s just a purdy lookin’ coin.
I saw one the other day, a 1940-P Mercury dime, the fella said it was 90% silver. Looked shiny and new, almost. He called it “Very Fine” condition, whatever that means. Said somethin’ about the picture being important, but heck, they all look kinda the same to me, just with different dates.

Common dates in circulated condition, that means the ones that have been passed around a lot, they say they ain’t worth much more than the silver in ‘em. But then you got them rare ones, and that’s a whole different story. They say you gotta find the current Mercury Dime values by year, and all these different coin whatchamacallits, “varieties” they call ‘em.
I heard tell of some guide, the NGC Coin Price Guide. They got prices and values for all sorts of these Mercury Dimes, from 1916 to 1945. They got all these numbers and letters, like MS13, MSPL4, MSFB79. Confusin’ as all get out, if you ask me. But I guess it matters to them collectors.
They keep sayin’ you gotta find the current Mercury Dime values by year and by these here “coin varieties.” Like I said, it depends on when they made it, where they made it – that’s the mint mark – and what kind of shape it’s in. Seems like the older ones are worth more, especially if they ain’t all beat up.
The prices, they say they’re all over the map. Some are just worth the silver, like I said. But then you got them rare ones, like that 1916-D, that they say is worth a whole lot. I ain’t never seen one of them, but I heard they’re somethin’ special.
They was talkin’ ‘bout another dime, an 1894-S Barber Dime, real old one, not a Mercury dime, but still. Said it was worth a million or two dollars! Can you believe that? Just for a little ol’ dime! Course, it had to be in good condition, and it was real rare, only a few of ‘em made.
See, they say the Mercury Dime Value is Conditional. That means it depends on how beat up it is. If the little olive branch on the back is all worn and faded, it ain’t worth much. But if it’s still clear, then it might be worth more. They got grades for it, like “good” and “fine,” but I can’t keep track of all that.
Now, here’s the thing about this 1922 dime. They made a whole bunch of these dimes up until 1930, except for a few years, like 1916 with that “D” they talk about, and then 1921 to 1923. See, things got tough, money was tight, and folks didn’t need as many coins. And guess what? No dimes were struck for 1922. Not a one! First time that happened since way back in 1826. That’s why this 1922 dime is so special, see? Cause they ain’t no regular 1922 dimes.
They was talkin’ ’bout another kinda dime, a 1982 “No P” dime. Said it was a mistake, they forgot to put the letter on it. And because of that little mistake, it’s rare and worth a lot of money. Imagine that! A mistake makin’ somethin’ valuable.
So, there ya have it. What I know about this 1922 Mercury dime, and some other dimes too. It ain’t much, but it’s somethin’. Mostly, it’s about how old it is, how many they made, what shape it’s in, and whether they made a mistake or not when they was makin’ it. And that silver, that’s important too.
